Viktor Frankl once said that, “What is to give light must endure the burning.” I believe that the mistakes we make in life contain important lessons. Unless we learn these lessons well, we will keep on making the same mistakes until we get them right. But once we have learned our lessons, it is important to share our insights with those who need it. In this way, we help to light the way for others with our experiences.

Today, I am going to share the life lessons that I have learned with you. It is my wish that my life lessons will light your life’s journey in some small way. This article is also my contribution to the Life Lessons Series hosted by Abubakar Jamil in collaboration with Farnoosh Brock. Without further ado, here are the lessons that I learned.

An assumption is something that we take for granted without bothering to find proof to support it. Assumptions are necessary. We have to assume many things to go about our daily lives. This is because we do not have the time and energy to challenge or to worry about every matter that comes our way. Unless we take certain things for granted, it would be very difficult to live. But making too many assumptions can also cause us problems. In this article, I shall address the dangers of assumptions.

Smiling Young Woman by Mdavidwole

Regrets can haunt and torment us long after the incidents have occurred. They can shackle us to the past and affect us at the worst possible moments. I am not fond of having regrets in my life because I know the pain it can cause. As far as I am able to, I make it a point to reduce the “what ifs” and “should haves” from my life. I live each moment as fully as I can and act decisively when I must. While my style of doing things may not appeal to all, it has helped me to live a life without regrets. I hope that what I share will do the same for you too.

Cherry Blossoms by Slonecker

Life is transient. We come into this world with nothing and when it is time to go, we leave with nothing. Yet while we live, it is all too easy to forget that we have very limited time. On the contrary, we feel as if we have too much time and as a result, take many things for granted. As 2010 draws to a close, yet another year in my life has passed. I am not going to wait until I lose the things I hold dear before I appreciate their value. Instead, I would like to take this time to give thanks.

I love routines because they are convenient. They help me to get something done without much thought or effort on my part. This means that I can conserve my energy for more important matters. But routines are a double-edged sword. While they have their uses, an overreliance on them will cause us to be stuck in a rut. To avoid this situation, it is beneficial to changes our routines from time to time. Before I discuss some simple changes we can make to our routines, let us look at some of the benefits that come with a change in routine.

Piano Lesson by Amazing Podgirl

When I was a little boy, I struggled with perseverance. I would begin a new project eagerly, but midway through I lost interest and gave up. One example was when I took up piano lessons. I cannot remember what inspired me to do so, but I must have gotten it into my head that playing the piano was cool. Soon, harsh reality set in and I realized that I needed to put in practice and hard work to look cool. It was too much effort for me. I quickly grew bored and resented missing my favourite cartoon shows during my lessons. In the end, I gave up and never played the piano again.

Upon reflection, I realized that I wanted to learn to play the piano based on a whim. But whims do not give you staying power when you face difficulties. Instead, I believe that having a burning purpose behind everything you do is the key to perseverance. When you know why you have to do something, you will get it done. Few odds can stop you from achieving your goals. Even so, it also helps to have other gentle reminders to keep you focused when the going gets tough. I have carefully selected some quotes on perseverance that I find inspiring. It is my hope and wish that these quotes will inspire you to persevere in the face of challenges as it has for me.

Bela Lugosi as Dracula 1931 by Nice Dawg

I am a big fan of Count Dracula. But even so, I am not blind to his failings. Despite his great powers, patience and planning, Dracula, the resident bad ass of Bram Stoker’s novel, failed to prevail against the heroes and came to a grisly end. His embarrassing death aside, the story of Count Dracula can serve as a cautionary tale. Without further ado, let us see what the world’s most famous vampire could have done better.

Anger is a difficult emotion to control. When you are livid with rage, you lose your ability to reason and turn into a monster. You shout, you rage, you smash things and cause destruction.
