Quarrel by Jonah Sng

I have been watching my favourite drama serial Return of the Condor Heroes lately. In the course of the show, I noticed that misunderstandings advance the story. For some reason or other, the male and female lovers always seem to get the wrong idea. As a result, they have many partings and reunions. How differently things would have turned out if they had taken the trouble to clarify their doubts.

In one scene, the female lead chances upon her lover while he is putting on a show. His aim is to mediate a conflict between two brothers. But due to the lie he made up, the female lead assumes he no longer loved her and leaves in tears. While the scene makes a very dramatic story, it is just as easy for us to get the wrong idea in real life. What then can we do to avoid misunderstandings?

Two on One by Kalypso Media Group

At first glance, it seems contradictory. How can we live in the moment if we think about the future? After all, by thinking about the future, we fill our minds with endless worries about things that we cannot control. In the process of planning, are we not likely to miss the moments? But does living in the moment mean giving up total control of our lives to external events? Does it mean we go through life in a reactive manner?

Aftermath of Sendai Earthquake by Wikipedia

A few days ago, everything was running smoothly in Japan. Today, the country is struggling to cope with the aftermath of an epic disaster. It is hard to look at the crisis that has hit Japan and not feel saddened by the great loss of lives. Meanwhile, the survivors have to deal with the massive disruptions and recovery. But things could have been far worse.

Given that Japan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, it is prone to frequent and powerful earthquakes. This is a fact that the Japanese have taken measures to deal with. Many buildings in Japan have deep foundations and shock absorbers to manage the impact of earthquakes. Both adults and children know what to do if an earthquake strikes. In fact, Japan is one of the most prepared countries in the world to deal with massive earthquakes. They are always in a state of constant readiness because of the constant danger. It is because of this preparation that Japan has managed to reduce the damage caused by this crisis.

Medieval Labyrinth by Wikipedia

Recently, I have taken an interest in mazes and labyrinths. When I was young, I found the movie Labyrinth fascinating. This was something I never forgot even though it has been over twenty years. Although I could not fully appreciate the movie then, I watched it again a few months ago and enjoyed myself thoroughly. But it was only yesterday that I realized the error in the movie’s name. You see what the movie depicted was a maze, not a labyrinth. Labyrinths are not supposed to confuse people; they are actually for healing and centring the mind.

Cherry Blossoms by Charley Lhasa

Impermanence is a favourite topic of Sandra’s. It is also something that is constantly at the back of my mind. Whether it is looking at cherry blossoms, reading or watching historical epics, I am always aware of the presence of impermanence. Yet it is not something that is necessarily bad. It is merely a part of this life. When there is a heavy storm, getting upset serves little purpose. All we can do is to adjust our actions to manage the situation. It is the same with impermanence. When we appreciate its value and place in this world, we can learn to manage it more effectively.

Thinking by Brainloc

Thinking in my head is a messy process. At any one point in time, there are a hundred and one things going on in my mind. These include thoughts, ideas, tasks, worries etc. Although I have no trouble staying focused, it can be hard to manage so many thoughts at once. It is therefore not surprising that ideas rarely turn out the way I imagine when I think in my head. It is only when I write down my thoughts that I can see the picture more clearly.
