Bust of Marcus Aurelius by Wikipedia

Life for many of us is trial and error. We live, we make mistakes and we fall down. Then we get back up and try all over again. Along the way, we gain insights and develop guidelines to make better choices and actions. There are many books and articles on guidelines to living a good life. The most famous of them would be Marcus AureliusMeditations, which I am sure many people have heard of and read.

Now I may not be a Roman Emperor or a wise philosopher. But I thought it would be a good exercise to write out a few guidelines of my own. On the one hand, it helps me to define my values and approach to living a good life. On the other hand, it helps me to examine them more closely.

You may not agree with all that I say. And this is fine because each of us has our own views about the world. But I do hope that you will be able to take away something with you. I also hope that it will cause you to reflect on and define some of the guidelines you have for living a good life.

Hexagram 47 Oppression

Hexagram 47 by Ben Finney

Times of adversity are the reverse of times of success, but they can lead to success if they befall the right man. When a strong man meets with adversity, he remains cheerful despite all danger, and this cheerfulness is the source of later successes; it is that stability which is stronger than fate. He who lets his spirit be broken by exhaustion certainly has no success. But if adversity only bends a man, it creates in him a power to react that is bound in time to manifest itself.

No inferior man is capable of this. Only the great man brings about good fortune and remains blameless. It is true that for the time being outward influence is denied him, because his words have no effect. Therefore in times of adversity it is important to be strong within and sparing of words.

-Hexagram 47 from The I-Ching or Book of Changes Translated by Richard Wilhelm, Cary F. Baynes. New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1997.

Starfish by Buck82

The Starfish Story by Loren Eiseley (1907 – 1977)

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, so he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects and throwing them into the ocean.

Having purpose and meaning in life is vital to living. Without a clear purpose, we drift from day to day like zombies, not knowing what we are doing or why. Without a clear path to follow, any path is just as good. Under such conditions, it is no surprise that we end up making poor choices that lead to problems and regrets in the future. But what makes a purpose inspirational? How do we find or create such a purpose for ourselves? While purpose is highly subjective and dependent on the individual, here are a few broad guidelines that might help you to create a worthy and inspirational one.

Dark Night by Mbarrison

Problems are a part of life. Every day, we have to face problems in various shapes and forms. It could be something simple and mundane like trying to deal with a virus in our PCs. Or it could be something more complicated like relationships. It could also be problems at work or something on a larger scale like unrest in the Middle East. All of these are problems that affect our lives directly or indirectly. While we can avoid some of these problems, we cannot avoid them all. Eventually, we will have to stand and fight.

In truth, facing problems is not such a bad thing. Since we cannot avoid all the problems or adversity in life, to be able to master challenges is a vital life skill. Our ability in this area determines whether we will be able to attain our goals and protect our interests. It determines whether life will shape or break us. As such, it makes perfect sense to master the challenges of life for the following reasons.

Depressed and Lonely by Luis Sarabia

When Evelyn asked me to write an article on self-love, I hesitated for a moment. For me, it feels weird for a guy to talk about self-love. But I am well aware that this is merely a view that I have about how guys should behave. But if there is a good enough reason, I am always more than willing to change my views. In this case, I feel it is worth it because some of my readers might just benefit from my experiences. As I wrote this article, it seems that I have a fair amount to say about self-love, making this is my longest post yet. The funny thing is, when I began my journey of self-discovery, I did not set out to find self-love. My holy grail was inner peace. Yet in the process, I learned about self-love as well.

Crippling Self Doubt by Meredith Farmer

Have you ever had to struggle with self-doubt and fears? I am sure all of us have had this experience in our lives. While a little doubt is useful and healthy in guarding against complacency and overconfidence, too much doubt can be crippling. The problem with crippling doubt is that fear paralyzes our actions.

Instead of seizing opportunities, we hesitate. We do not trust our ability to go forth and shape our future. Instead of growing with wisdom and experience, we remain in our comfort zones. We are unwilling to risk failure and setbacks. Thus, when the crucial moments arise where we have no place to run or hide; is it any wonder that we experience crushing failure? Not only do doubts hinder us, it robs us of the opportunities to gain the experience needed to deal with problems. How then are we to deal with doubts in an effective manner?
