True Heart by Fangol

There will be instances in life that require you to win over people who oppose you and gain their sincere support. It is possible to gain compliance through bribes, fear and the use of force. But this is not sincere support. In any case, you will never be able to win hearts and minds in this manner. Instead, this lack of true support may cause problems for you in the future. For example, people might withdraw their support for you at key points due to a lack of loyalty.

What should you do in this case? You must move people with your sincerity. Specifically, you must show them your true heart.

What is the True Heart of Sincerity?

Dictionary.com states that sincerity means freedom from deceit, hypocrisy or duplicity; honesty in intention or in communicating; earnestness.

But the true heart of sincerity is far more complex. According to “the Korean Mind,” the meaning includes beliefs, spirituality, attitude and character. To show one’s true heart, a person must be trusted to act in accord with the highest social and ethical standards. He or she must be unselfish, honest, loyal and diligent. If need be, this person must be willing to make great sacrifices and go beyond the call of duty. This person must show that they deserve the chance they seek.

The Need to Show Your True Heart

There are many reasons why people may oppose you and your goals in the first place. It could be due to their comfort zones, their way of thinking, the upheavals due to change and so on.

They might also question your sincerity, ability and credibility. Do you have what it takes? Will you go the distance to fulfil your goals? Can they trust you if they lend your their support? Why should they support you? How will they benefit from supporting you? Is supporting you the right and best choice given the situation?

How else will you overcome such opposition unless you show your true heart?

Suffice to say, the bigger the change involved, the greater the need to show your true heart to move opposition. After all, if it were not some radical goal or idea in the first place, no one would oppose you. But because your request may bring great change, there will be great resistance that you need to overcome. And if you need the support, you will have to put in the effort. Here, you have to be wary of the factors that might prevent you from showing your true heart.

Factors That Hinder Your True Heart

1. Too Much Pride

You might feel that there is no need to demean yourself or to waste time trying to win people to your point of view. Why should you make yourself look foolish and ridiculous in the eyes of others? If they refuse to support you, it is their loss. Why must you endure repeated rejections? You do not need them and you can easily find support elsewhere.

Sometimes, it is not possible to find alternative sources of support. If this is the case, then pride may prevent you from showing your true heart. Here, you have to ask yourself what is more important, your pride or your goal. What will you achieve if you hold on to your pride? What will you achieve if you choose your goal instead?

2. Lack of Perseverance

It takes time to overcome great resistance due to the inertia involved. Thus, to move people with your true heart, you will need great perseverance. But here, the effort involved might be too much for some. In our time, where we are used to getting everything we want instantly, we might lack the needed patience. When we meet the first sign of obstacles, we might choose to give up instead of persevering. We might feel that we do not have the time to waste trying to move someone with our true heart.

If you have alternatives, then this is not a problem. But if you have no other choice, then perseverance is critical in moving people with your true heart. Here, what you choose to do and say and how you do and say it matters.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

The sincerity shown by one’s true heart is not begging or empty words. Begging has no sense of dignity or sincerity. Both begging and empty words do not convince people to lend you their full support. Such superficial forms of persuasion are unlikely to win hearts and minds. As such, people might withdraw their support at any time.

On the other hand, showing your true heart requires you to be dignified and humble. You must convince people with actions that back up your words. You must show your sincerity and ability to carry out what you say. You must also show how people will benefit if they support you, especially if great change is involved.

Here it is better to go the distance and do more than you promised. When your true heart moves people, they will support you out of respect and admiration. Your cause becomes their cause. Your goal becomes their goal. For those who are more practical-minded, they now see the benefits of helping you. Yet even this goes beyond simple self-interest. Your true heart has moved them and they are now willing to go the distance for you.

Moving people with your true heart motivates them to keep their word and lend you their full support. How then do you go about showing your true heart?

Actions Speak Louder Than Words by Mandajuice

How to Manifest Your True Heart

The best way to show your true heart is through your actions. Words alone are not enough. Your words must have actions to back them up. Only then can you display your sincerity. You must prove you are worthy and deserving of a chance. Only then can you be trusted. You must show that you know what you are doing and that you can manage any challenges that arise. Only then can you display your ability. When you accomplish all these things, trusting you and your goal becomes the best choice and the right course of action to follow.

It takes great courage to stand up against opposition to your plans and goals. It takes even greater courage to take steps to overcome this opposition. What follows are some ways to show your true heart.

1. Consistency

Consistency in character is the key to showing your true heart. There is no point putting on a show to get what you want and stopping thereafter. On the one hand, people may detect your ulterior motives early. Thus, any further effort will be in vain. On the other hand, if they find out about your lack of consistency later, it could lead to great disappointment. This will not only damage your credibility but also shatter the faith of people who trusted you.

So in all things be consistent. Do what is right to achieve your goals. Take the steps you need to overcome opposition. Do what you say and keep your word. Keep on improving and developing yourself to attain your goals. Most of all never stop trying and giving your best.

2. Effort

There is a price to pay for everything. This is certainly so if you hope to influence or move someone to support you, when they oppose you at first. The greater the change they need to make to their lives, the greater their resistance will be.

To counter this, you will have to make a great effort to show your sincerity. But here it is better to work smart instead of just working hard. Be creative in finding a solution. It is prudent to do things and offer benefits that appeal to people instead of turning them off. Therefore, you must understand the needs and wants of the person you are trying to influence. If you can see things from their point of view, you have a higher chance of knowing how to persuade them with your true heart. Done in the right way, you will achieve twice the results for half the effort.

3. Ability and Passion

It takes time for people to come round to new ideas and to accept them. They might be hesitant to support you because of the change involved. They may fear to step out of their comfort zone. Or, they may fear that you might not have what it takes to manage in the end.

If this is the case, then it is best to take action to show your ability. Take steps to ease their fears and help them to manage the transition better. Show that you know what you are doing and prove it with results if possible. Show that you are capable of dealing with any challenges that arise. Most of all, you must show that you have the ability and will to see thing through right to the end. If you can share your passion with people and make them enthusiastic about it as well, it will be easier to move them with your true heart.

Taking Action

Few people make an effort to show their true hearts today. It is either too much work or there might not be something compelling enough to make them do so. Worse still, they might not know how to go about it which is a real shame. If you have a dream that is worthy, do not be afraid to show your true heart and fight for it with all your might. Hopefully the steps I shared will come in useful.

Have you ever changed your mind or stance because someone made the effort to move you with his or her true heart? Is it easy to move you with sincerity? Have you ever moved someone with your true heart? How did you go about doing so? What were the challenges you faced and how did you manage them? Do share your thoughts and comments below! :)

  1. I can think of so many examples in my own life of the wisdom you present here, but I’ll mention the most recent one that comes to mind. My daughter and her boyfriend often hit an impasse because they approach an issue by verbally pushing and demanding. Recently, the boyfriend had insisted on taking a particular course of action with their son and my daughter balked. Because it was something that would affect me as well, I had an opinion about it, too, one that did not favor the boyfriend’s position. A few days later, he came back to talk to me. He showed his true heart in a sincere way by talking openly and honestly about what was on his mind. And he listened respectfully to me. At the end of the discussion, I had changed my mind and agreed to his proposal.

You have offered great advice here by showing what prevents us from moving mountains with our true heart and then, once the obstacles have been dealt with, how to use our true heart in powerful ways.

One other thought. When I read the post title, I was reminded of the Bible verse that says if we have but a mustard seed of faith, we can move mountains.

    • Hi Galen,

That was a great story you shared about the influence showing one’s true heart can have! At least the boyfriend was prudent enough to approach you in the proper manner to explain his case. And you have shown great open-mindedness is hearing him out and adopting his plan when you realized its merits.

I was influenced by a Korean Drama that I am currently watching to write this article. Korean society is to stifling that people have to overcome a lot of barriers just to attain their goals. While the guidelines may have been relevant many years ago, it has failed to change with the times. But this is understandable since a change in something so fundamental can cause great upheaval in society.

I remember the mustard seed of faith from my Sunday school classes as well. :)

  2. The “actions speak better than words” picture is so touching. I love it!

I am always greatly moved by sincere people. Somethings can’t be faked. Somehow, we can always smell it, when someone is being insincere. I think children know how to tap to their true heart very effortlessly. My young cousin one day literally stole my heart. Was seated casually in the sitting room and he came over and gave me a random hug. He said that I should be visiting them more often because he misses me. Oh my, I was touched by his sweet gesture. You can imagine from that day, I do my best to visit him as often as I can. And when I do, I go bearing very thoughtful gifts. I just hope children never lose that sweet innocence of being genuinely good to people. A true heart is a rare treasure.

I agree with you. That “actions speak louder than words” picture is beautiful. It caught my eye when I was looking for pictures to go along with the post. There are no words, yet it conveys so much.

Like you, I am also moved by sincere people. This is part of the reason why I wrote the article.

Indeed it is hard to fake sincerity. I certainly enjoyed the story you shared about your young cousin. It is not hard to feel his sincerity for asking you to visit more often.

The innocence of children should be protected for as long as possible. There are so many things in this world that can rob children of their innocence.

  3. Amazingly wonderful post my friend Irving!

Yes I have moved people with my true heart – I remain in my truth and I send love, love and more love out. I had a woman oppose me for not even sure the reasons – she just didn’t like my confidence, or maybe even style and she told me at a meeting that “I’m going to tell you that we think differently”….I was fine with that since we all have our own thoughts and I respect that. She continued to remain cold towards me – I kept pressing in with my sincerity and love. Finally she broke – it took her a month or so but she broke.

I don’t take things personally and that helps! Took me a long time to learn that though,

There are so many reasons for people to oppose us, but things do not have to be this way. If we can show our true heart like you have, we can have a more harmonious relationship with the people around us.

I agree. Not taking things personally also helps when it comes to showing our true hearts. Great point!

  6. Amazing post! One that speaks of your wisdom. I like the idea of moving mountains with sincerity. Definitely not by force or expectations but through a sincere heart.

I enjoyed what you said: “Suffice to say, the bigger the change involved, the greater the need to show your true heart to move opposition.” This sentence struck me very much. I believe it to be true and something to bear in mind. It can help us break through the walls and barriers of opponents, competitors and enemies to win them over to our side. Only when we engage our heart can we demonstrate consistency, passion and integrity.

    Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for your kind words! :)

It is not easy, but the true heart of sincerity can indeed move mountains with time and perseverance. The key is not to give up in the face of opposition especially when the goal matters.

As you say, we need to show consistency, passion and integrity to break through walls and barriers.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  7. I agree that nothing prevents us from showing our true heart more than our pride. For some people they, think their ego is all they have, making them prone to personal clashes with colleagues.
Stuart recently posted..review of jamoramaMy Profile

    • Hi Stuart,

Pride can be a stumbling block to sincerity.

But more often than not, life humbles the proud eventually because change does not have favourites. It is far better to be sincere than it is to be proud.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  8. You have asked: “Have you ever changed your mind or stance because someone made the effort to move you with his or her true heart?”

My answer is yes. Not very long ago I was dead set against my husband taking a specific course of action when he outlined what he planned in email and on the telephone. But when he arrived home and we spoke heart to heart he understood my concerns and we were able to make some changes that addressed them. I made a complete turnaround on that issue.

Authenticity is the degree to which one is true to one’s own personality, spirit, or character, despite the demands of society or one’s conditioning. And I have come to appreciate the unique challenges that arise in learning to communicate effectively in the virtual world. Problems with miscommunication occur so frequently in the face-to-face world, that it’s no wonder that communication difficulties are even more pronounced in a medium that relies solely on the written word, without facial expressions, body language, or vocal tone and inflection.

Thanks so much for sharing this insightful post with us.

    • Hi Timethief,

That is a lovely story you have shared. It always warms my heart to see couples take the time to understand each other’s point of view and find common ground. This is one of the keys of any lasting relationship as you have shown.

Being authentic is not always easy in life. But even if we should fall short at times, we must never stop trying to be authentic.

I agree, there is so much room for error in communication that we tend to miscommunicate often. Even if I were to be talking to a cloned version of myself, I could still misunderstand myself at times. How much more so if I were talking to someone else who is not me? Unless we make a conscious effort to be aware of the room for miscommunication, we are more likely to miscommunicate than not.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  9. I really like the picture you’ve posted, it shows that children are more capable to live with true hearts, they just don’t play roles and aren’t proud to much. Lack of Perseverance doesn’t play a role in their life. They just simple love. And sometimes hate.

    • Hi Julie,

It is true that children have less barriers that prevent them from showing their true hearts.

We should learn from them and try to be authentic in all that we do.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  10. Hi Irving!

This is a beautiful article. You make some excellent points that I hadn’t really considered. Usually I am big on observing the hearts of others and then deciding whether or not they will be on my team moving forward. For instance, I had a big project to attend to for one of my children. I received excellent support from some educators and experts up to a point – and then some things they agreed to they never came through on or answered. To me, that lack of follow through or response means they are not sincere and not willing to go the extra mile. In staying true to my purpose, I simply take the best of what I can from each and follow the signs to the best possible destination.

    • Hi Julie,

We can all learn a lot more about people by observing their hearts and actions instead of just what they say.

I like how you handled the situation in your story. I doubt I could have done better. People have their priorities in life and we have ours. It is important to seek alternatives if a particular option does not bear fruit for us.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  11. Hi Irving,

There are many instances that I have seen in my life that seem sincere and true. They cause is worthy, they present it honestly and it makes you feel open and free to support them. I do find myself noticing when someone has something less than a true heart and seems motivated by an outside influence. I tend to shy away from these types of people. I like your statement about actions is the way to show your true heart. As they say, actions speak louder than words. Thanks for the inspiration.
