Most people prefer to have good fortune to misfortune. When things go well, they hope it will remain this way forever. But things rarely stay good for long. Once you have achieved a cherished goal and reached the top of the hill, there is nowhere else to go but down. But is misfortune inevitable? The answer is no. There are ways to prolong good fortune, but you have to make an effort to do so.

Why Bad Times Follows Good Times

For most people, misfortunes come as a shock to them. They never expect things to take such a drastic turn. They often wonder why bad things must happen to them. In truth, Life is indifferent to our plight. It does not single us out to make us suffer. But if we do not live in a prudent way and take precautions, we are likelier to have manage events badly. It is akin to not saving or preparing for a rainy day. This in turn leads to misfortunes for us. Similarly, if we take responsibility for our lives and live in the right way, we are likelier to have good fortune.

The key to prolonging good fortune is to understand the reasons for misfortune and our part in it. What follows are some of the chief culprits of misfortune.

1. Complacency

Good times and times of ease can cause people to become complacent. Instead of being alert and aware as they once were, they might slacken in their vigilance. This is how misfortune can take people by surprise. While it is understandable to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labour, it is not prudent to go to extremes. You cannot assume that good times will last forever because change is the only constant in life.

2. Indifference

Misfortune can only take you by surprise if you allow it to. There are signs everywhere that herald the coming of changes way in advance. This means that if you are watchful and aware, you often have ample time to prepare to avoid or pre-empt misfortune. If you cannot avoid misfortune, at the very least, you can prepare to manage it well. As such, you simply cannot afford to be indifferent to the world around you. Neither should you take anything for granted.

3. Stagnation

Stagnation robs you of the ability and skills to react swiftly to changes. Instead of taking decisive action, you may flounder at the critical moments that can result in misfortune. The world is always changing. What may have worked in the past may not be relevant today. With each new change comes a new set of skills that you may need to manage it well. As such, you have to keep learning and growing to keep up. If you do not keep up with the times, you will be less able to prolong your good fortune.

How to Prolong Good Fortune

Now that we are aware of the chief culprits of misfortune, how then can we prolong good fortune?

1. Take Responsibility

This is the key step to prolonging good fortune. Leaving your fate to chance can cause you great misfortune at the worst possible time. At the same time, it can also shorten whatever good fortune you have.

Your life is yours to live. How it turns out depends on the choices you make and the actions you take. Unless you take responsibility and steer your life in the direction you want to go, the changes and events of the world is likely to toss you about. By taking responsibility for your life, you are likelier to avoid needless problems and prolong your good fortune.

2. Be Aware and Prepared

Changes do not happen suddenly. Long before changes happen, there will be signs that herald the coming change. If you are aware of these signs through logic and intuition, you can prepare early to manage the change well. Here, prevention is better than cure and foresight is better than hindsight.

In the best case, you will be able to avoid or pre-empt the change by nipping any problems in the bud. If you cannot avoid the change, at the very least you will be prepared to manage it well. The key here is to take any area in your life and subject it to scrutiny.

Think ahead about the likely opportunities and challenges you will face as you continue down your current path. What can you do and how can you prepare to manage them well? Should you continue down this path or switch to another path? How should you prepare accordingly? Asking these questions and preparing to manage the answers is a good way to ensure that your good fortune continues.

3. Keep Up with Changes and Change

All your planning and preparation will be for naught if you do not keep up with the changes and change. The key changes to note would be those that have a direct or indirect impact on your life. Unless you adjust, your plans might not be the most effective. To worsen matters, you may not be prepared to handle new developments well.

Thus, learn and grow at every opportunity you have. This will give you the needed skills, knowledge and insights to manage any changes in your life better. When you can handle anything that Life throws at you, you will be able to prolong your good fortune.

Prolonged Good Fortune Requires Effort and Balance

We have a great amount of choices in our lives today. But not all of these choices are beneficial to us. This is why we need self-control and discipline to make the right and best choices. Simply doing as we please is a recipe for misfortune. But at the same time, rigid self-control will only cause problems for us. Here, balance is the key.

Similarly, being prepared is not the same as constant worry. If you are fully prepared, there is less of a need to worry because you are ready to manage various scenarios. Having a plan to follow ensures that events are less likely to catch you off guard. At the same time, you are likelier to make good choices in the midst of chaos because you have your plan and goals to guide you.

Once you are done with planning, you should carry on your life normally with fewer worries. After all, you have done what you can to prepare. Here you must strike a balance between living in the future by worrying and focusing on the now to get there. By making this effort in your life, you will be likelier to prolong your good fortune.

Taking Action

Having prolonged good fortune is the result of prudent choices, actions and effort. While it is necessary to be prepared, we must also avoid going to extremes. Balance, after all, is one of the vital keys to good fortune.

  1. I believe we don’t have control over all things so we take things moment at a time – I like to abide by moment living – one step at a time and breathing along the way. You make some amazing points and yes change is a constant.

I also believe in the power of the word and visualizatioin. We manifest what we visulize and why not visualize good fortunes in life and living a life of abundance.

    Thank you for your insights,

    • Hi Nancy,

You are right, there are many things beyond our control.

While it is true we should live in the here and now and take things step by step, it also pays to step back occasionally to see if we are heading in the right direction. It also does not hurt to plan ahead a little towards our goals.

Visualization is a great idea to ensure that we have continued abundance and good fortune.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  2. I think we also prolong good fortune by our attitudes, by how we interpret what is happening. Einstein said that we can choose to see everything as a miracle or nothing as a miracle. When we are looking through a lens that sees the universe as a basically good place, and we find value in everything, and when we can refrain from labeling things as bad in a reactionary sort of way, our good fortune certainly is prolonged and expanded.

Great post title–this will catch everyone’s attention!

    • Hi Galen,

I agree, attitudes can indeed prolong our good fortune.

Given that we will face ups and downs in life, it is vital to maintain an attitude that lives us up even when we are going through a down time. Nothing is really good or bad, only thinking makes it so. If we can apply this at the right moments, we are likelier to prolong our good fortune.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  3. I like what you said that good fortune is a result of wise choices, actions and effort. I have made many mistakes and taken unwise actions in the past. Now that I am more conscious, I hope to take wiser actions.

Good fortune is possible for anyone. Everyone is equally worthy and deserving. It is up to us to maintain and prolong it. We minimize negative surprise by being prepared.

    • Hi Evelyn,

As long as we are more conscious about the impact of our choices, we will make better ones. One of the keys to making better choices is prudence after all.

I agree with you. There is no better way to minimize misfortune and to prolong good fortune than to be prepared as best as we can.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  4. I like your thoughts about change Vizier. I think just accepting the fact that things change is a step in the right direction. Not only for good fortune but everything else in life. I was counting on permanency in certain areas of my life and got a prolonged dose of bad fortune when I didn’t realize that a change in circumstance was possible. Prolonging good fortune maybe like being on a sail boat and trying to guide it in teh right direction (and stay on board) – knowing a strong wind gust can blow you over and sink you. lol

    • Hi Vishnu,

We all know that change happens. But it is harder to implement this knowledge consistently in our lives and to take action to deal with it.

I am sorry to hear that you had a prolonged dose of misfortune. Do let me know in the future if I can be of any assistance with my foresight.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  5. Your commenters took the words out of my mouth Irving. I was going to say that we don’t hold all the cards to our fortune or misfortune as Nancy said but I would have also given a similar answer to your own. I also agree that our interpretation of events can make a great difference to our perception of how fortunate we are. I would say that I don’t believe that once you achieve a key goal the only way is down. For me and the high achievers I have come across they simply install another goal to aim for. But maybe this is specific to that type of character.

    • Hi Pea,

You’re right. Having achieved a key goal, decline is not the only way left. But it is a likelier possibility if we become complacent or arrogant. We have to keep on striving ahead instead of letting ourselves go. But in the end, it is also prudent to have balance in our lives.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  6. i think complacency is a big issue for a lot of us, esp when we get too giddy with our achievements. a line must be drawn betwen celebrating our success but not getting complacent

    • Hi Noch Noch,

Yeah complacency can be a big issue for anyone. But it is understandable. After overcoming so much hardship, who would not want to relax a little and celebrate? The important point here is not to let ourselves go too far and relax too much. Balance is the key to success in life.

  7. Be aware and prepare…This is the most important line I have ever read here…And I totally agree with this…Thank you for the help…

  8. Such a great and inspiringl text! I really like your point on taking action and being prepared for the misfortune, when it comes expected, it doesn’t feel like a tragedy. Although it could be really hard to live with that bad feeling inside, that you can expect something wrong in every second. I think there must be a balance between the 2 behaviors.

    • Hi Julie,

You’re right. It is not healthy to always worry about what will go wrong all the time.

This is why I rely on my divinations to help me to foresee events. If there is something bad on my radar, I can prepare for it in advance. Otherwise, I just carry on with my life without too much worry.

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  9. Hi Irving,

How have you been? Yeah,we all want to prolong good fortune and minimize bad ones, it is human nature. Life is sometimes like sine waves, ups and down, Good after bad ones feel good, there is always hope when we are in bad situation that there is light at the end of tunnel.

    • Hi Preeti,

How have you been? I hope you and your family are doing well. I am doing fine myself! :)

Haha! Life is like sine waves! That is a great analogy and one that I have certainly never heard of before. But it is apt to describe the rise and fall of fortunes in life.

The good thing is that because things go in cycles, bad situations will not last forever. So we should not give up hope when facing adversity.
