Luke’s Strongwoman by Official US Air Force

I love Galaxy Quest, a spoof of Star Trek. As a favourite comedy of mine, it never fails to make me laugh. But despite the humour of the show, one of its catchphrases, “Never give up, never surrender” is something we would all do well to bear in mind. Struggling against the odds can be difficult. It is always easier to give up and surrender than to endure the hardships that come with holding on. But success can only come to the one who has the fortitude to hold out and keep on trying. If you give up, there is no chance of success at all. To this end, here are 4 reasons we should never give up and never surrender.

1. Giving Up Leads to Regrets

Giving up can lead to regrets. The moment we give up, we have zero chance of success. It is no longer possible to succeed because we have stopped trying. If it is a dream or a goal that is important to us, there is bound to be regrets. But as long as we hold out, there will always be a chance, no matter how slim, of success. As long as we never stop trying, we could succeed against great odds. The times change constantly and unfavourable conditions could become favourable ones in time. The important thing is to hold out until an opportunity arises.

2. Perception is Changeable

We have our up days and we have our down days. Some days we are at the very top of the world and we feel invincible. Nothing can stop us from reaching our goals or getting what we want. Other days, we feel like crap and have trouble getting out of bed. Every molehill becomes a daunting mountain that we lack the strength to climb. During such days, it helps to remember that we can change our perception.

When we start to see things negatively, it means that we have allowed the problems we face to overwhelm us. What we need is some time out to rest. Or we may need some new ideas to fire us up again. But with the right stimulus, we can change the way we view a situation and press on once more. The point is not to give up so quickly when we feel discouraged. Our views and moods can change for the better with time.

3. Likelier to Find Solution

Often the answer is not immediately obvious. We may find ourselves discouraged by setbacks and a lack of solutions that work. But hanging on does not mean doing the same thing and expecting different results. It means trying different approaches until we get the results we want. Failure and mistakes are nothing more than lessons to learn. They are there to inform us that our approach is not getting the results we want. The only thing to do is to learn from our mistakes and adjust our actions until we attain our goals. Thus, the longer you hold out, the likelier you are to find a solution.

4. Greater Capacity to Cope with Life

There is much truth in Nietzsche’s famous saying, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” It is always that extra rep with the weights or the extra mile that I run that causes my muscle and endurance to grow. It is the same in life. The greater the adversity we handle, the greater our capacity to cope with difficulty in the future. If we give up at the first sign of trouble, we will never learn to endure hardship. And if we do not learn to endure hardship, we will never be able to handle more than we possibly could. Only by not giving up can we break through our barriers and grow.

Taking Action

In the face of adversity, our mind usually goes first and convinces us that we cannot succeed. What is sad is that people usually give up when they are just about to reach their goals. If only they had hung on a little longer or put in a little more effort. But this does not have to be your story. As long as you never give up and never stop trying to find innovative solutions, you can overcome your challenges.

      Hi Sandy,

I am glad you liked the pictures. Choosing the right pictures to convey and enhance the message in each post is not easy. Sometimes I get it right, at other times I don’t. In this case, I think the woman pulling the jeep is a great way of getting the idea of not giving up across. I am lucky I managed to find it!

These are all excellent reasons for not giving up. Realizing that adversity is a natural part of life makes it easier to not give up. Everything changes and this too will pass.

      Hi Sandra,

That is a good point! If we realize that adversity is part and parcel of life it does make it easier to hold on. And you are right when you say that everything changes and whatever adversity we face will pass in time. Remembering this will indeed help us to hold out.

  5. Before I even read past the title, I thought of the movie Galaxy Quest. Then I thought, “I’m the only geek who would think of this silly movie.” Then I read the first line and didn’t feel so bad about myself. :)

Great post, man. I’m reminded of the famous Winston Churchill quote, “When going through hell, keep going.” It doesn’t get simpler than that. Every spiritual text from every great teacher has put such a strong emphasis on persistence, especially when times are tough.

    Thanks for the encouragement!

I love your quote by Winston Churchill! You are perfectly right, it doesn’t get any simpler than that. Persistence and perseverance is the only way to get through tough times.

  6. We should never give up. We should only press-on. We should only look up , never look down. Fly high, never crash n burn. And if we do crash and burn, just build ourselves up. Its up to us.

      Hi Jonathan,

I agree with you. Moving forward is the only way to get through life. Even if we do suffer a few knockdowns, we have to get up and continue to press on.

Perfect timing. My energy for training for my black belt test has waned lately. A few minor injuries made me question whether this 59 year old body was up to the task. I took in every word of your post. I’m going to go to taekwondo practice this morning and give it my all. Thank you for the taekwondo kick in the butt! I needed that!

On the subject of never giving up, I’d like to use marathon running as an example. After 20 miles it’s extremely important to concentrate and not give up. At this stage the blood has started to drain away from your brain, (going to your legs where it’s needed). This makes you feel light headed, and you can easily lose your resolve to run the marathon. Your body is saying “walk, walk, I’m tired”, but you must overcome that urge and continue the race.

“Never give up, never surrender” should be the mantra for any marathon runner.

      Hi John,

I have never run 20 miles before, but I remember how light headed I felt when I read about 5km years ago. I agree that we have to overcome the urge to walk and give up especially if you are in a marathon. Indeed “Never give up, never surrender” would make a good mantra for any marathon runner.

Thank you for sharing! It illustrates my point of not giving up perfectly! :)

  9. Hi Irving,
I can’t think of a good reason to give up on something UNLESS you decide in your heart you no longer want to go after that thing. I do believe in allowing ourselves to change our minds and be flexible. Sometimes we stubbornly hang onto something long after we should give up and let it go – like say a marriage. But, for the most part I do believe in making it a habit to do something, no matter how small it is, toward achieving your goals every day. Thank you for this excellent post!

      Hi Angela,

Sometimes it may be too difficult for us to continue and we have no more hope of reaching our goals. It is true that such a view is subjective and we could well be consumed by negativity to see events clearly. This is why it is so important to realize our perceptions are not reality and that we should never give up especially during these dark times.

Knowing when to let go is the opposite of never giving up and it is very important too. If we continue to hold on when we should let go, we will only end up wasting time and hurting ourselves. As the famous military strategist Wu Zi once said, “If you perceive possibilities, then advance. If you realize difficulties, then retreat. Control gives victory.”

Since the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step as Lao Tzu so wisely put it, doing something small each day to reach our goals is the best way to proceed.

Thank you for your comments! :)

  10. Irving,

I love star trek and I am science geek at heart and I also loved the galaxy quest, it was a great spoof movie with heart and message.

Sometimes, in life many of us go through a phase when we want to give up and nothing is working or feels like nothing is working. I have been there a few times so I know but key is to take a break and get back to doing work. 99% of the time whatever is bothering us will not matter in year from now.

Good post, I needed to read this now :-) Thanks.

Taking a step back for a break when we need it is crucial to regenerating the strength needed to press on. I love your wise observation that “99% of the time, whatever is bothering us will not matter a year from now.” That is very true. Everything passes. By keeping this perspective in mind, it helps us to get through whatever needs doing.

Thank you for your comments! :)

  13. If one truly gives it their full commitment, even if they fail, I’d argue that they may still have no regrets.

Regrets often stem from looking back and acknowledging you didn’t do everything you could have. You didn’t make the ultimate effort.

If one makes the ultimate effort and yet still doesn’t succeed, at least they’ll have the peace of mind to know that they gave it their very all.

      Hi Bamboo Forest,

I agree with you. As long as we have tried and given our all, we will have no regrets whether we succeed or fail. And in any case, failure just means we are not doing something right. All that remains is to adjust our actions until we get the desired results.
