As 2011 ends and 2012 approaches, it is a good time to reflect. Then I read Galen’s yearly ritual and retreat to her Batcave. This set me thinking. While my ritual is nothing like Galen’s, I too prepare for the new year in my own way.

2011 Thinking Ahead

My word for 2011 was “Thinking Ahead.” My aim was to continually practice to improve my foresight through divination and other means. While I did not get down to learning the game of “Go” fully, I did improve my foresight through other means. No matter what I did, I always made sure to think ahead.

2011 was not an easy year for me. I faced many difficulties that I barely managed. This forced me to think ahead and to divine extensively to see how best to act in the chaos. In the process, I found my usual divination questions to be somewhat lacking. To resolve this issue, I had to come up with new questions and to look at each situation from new angles. Because of adversity, my creativity and foresight had to improve to cope.

The Tao of 2012 for the Vizier

Everything in life is connected. Events that happen today have their roots and causes in the past. Each New Year that comes stands on the back of the year that has passed. As such, things that will happen in the future are already underway even if you are not fully aware of it. Because there is no way to assess the Tao of the new year on my own, I divine to prepare for the year ahead. The reading I got reveals that my Tao for 2012 is “Biting Through.”

I-Ching Hexagram 21 by Ben Finney

Yijing Hexagram 21: Biting Through

BITING THROUGH has success.
It is favourable to let justice be administered.

When an obstacle to union arises, energetic biting through brings success. This is true in all situations. Whenever unity cannot be established, the obstruction is due to a talebearer and traitor who is interfering and blocking the way. To prevent permanent injury, vigorous measures must be taken at once. Deliberate obstruction of this sort does not vanish of its own accord. Judgment and punishment are required to deter or obviate it.

The image here is that of an obstruction that prevents an open mouth from closing. To bring the lips together, the mouth has to bite through the obstruction with energy. This is the way to manage the Tao of the situation to have success.

Applied to my life, there are obstructions that I have to deal with energetically. Once these obstructions appear, I have to act quickly and take vigorous measures to overcome them. But at the same time, I must make sure that I proceed in the right way. On the one hand, I must be clear about the best way to proceed. On the other hand, I must proceed with the right amount of energy. If I do not strike a proper balance in the measures I take, I will meet with misfortune.

2012 Perseverance

With my reading in mind, the best way to manage my Tao for 2012 is to persevere. So “Perseverance” is the word I am choosing for 2012. The obstructions I face will not be easy to remove. If they were, they would not be obstructions for me in the first place.

I will probably have to break down the obstructions into a more manageable size to resolve it one by one. Then, I will need to follow up and to ensure that there are no loose ends or relapse. This will require a fair amount of perseverance on my part. By keeping this big picture in mind, I will know how to manage each problem as they arise.

  1. I always give thanks before midnight… no matter what the old year brought, as I made it through. I also give thanks upon greeting the new year. I know that I will be doing all within my abilities to make 2012 a better year, not just for me, but for all. Every little bit counts.

I like your mention of breaking your obstacle down… into more manageable sections. Yes. I will be thinking of you on your journey.

    • Hi Barbara,

It is good to give thanks for the year that we have gotten through. Life is fragile and most of us do not know when our time is up.

You’re right though. We have to give each year our fullest effort. Our lives are interconnected and we have to think about our loved ones as well since we are irreplaceable to them.

Thank you for thinking of me on my journey, it gives me strength! :)

  3. Perseverance is a big one, Irving. I used to wrongly assume that all of my thought-habits were logical and intelligent. This assumption has caused failures and disappointments over the years. If my collection of beliefs always inspired me to persevere when aspiring higher, there’d be no reason to question them, but rarely is this the case for me, or for most human beings. I’ve had to persever through my own self imposed beliefs of lace and limit. I had to shift my focus; I had to value the truth over being right about my current points of view. This shift increased my capacity to recognize the truth when it’s offered to me. Courage is precisely what it takes to heal the discouraging inner conditions that stop us from living our dreams… You too have that courage.

    • Hi Rob,

Perseverance is indeed a big one. But given the path I have chosen to take, there is little choice in the matter.

You’re right though. It’s not only the external obstacles I have to deal with, but also the inner ones as well. I must be careful not to sabotage myself and make things even more difficult that they already are.

I always wondered what it felt like when heroes walked into a trap knowing full well what lay ahead for them. Now I know and boy is courage necessary to prevent myself from fleeing over the mountains and across the oceans. There is no way for me but forward.

Thank you for your encouragement! I appreciate it! :)

  4. I never have any resolutions at the end of the year. These reviews at the end of the year are very common. Some people call them resolutions, some of them call them goals. I call them resolutions. And I never have any of them at nye. OK, I lied. I only have one resolution for the next year: I want to do my best all the time! If it’s about baby steps, it’s okay for me. I don’t like the dramatic promises.
Cindy recently posted..Problems with wisdom teethMy Profile

    • Hi Cindy,

Wanting to do your best all the time is a good resolution to have. What matters is that it works for you and means something to you. But do be careful. It can be hard to do your best all the time when the going gets tough. This is something you have to watch out for.

I hope 2012 turns out to be a great year for you where you can look back at the end and say you stuck to this resolution. :)

Thank you for sharing your lovely comments! :)

  5. H Irving,

It was fascinating to read how you have used the I-Ching to get a sense of the coming year and choose your 2012 word. I’m so amazed by your courage. As you said, 2011 was not an easy year for year and now with 2012 you will be biting through! At the same time, I have complete confidence in you. I know whatever challenges you face will deepen your wisdom and strengthen your resolve.

How kind of you to offer us an opportunity to ask you a question. I’m so excited by the prospect! I’m in such a huge transition phase, it will be difficult to decide what exactly to ask. I will be chewing on this and will be in touch.

Thank you for sharing your process with us. I will be with you in spirit!

    • Hi Sandra,

I assumed that anyone who uses divination would want to get a sense of the coming year. Ok my close friend is afraid to know, but I thought this was common practice. It is for me because if I want to avoid unpleasant situations, I must have enough time to prepare and knowing way in advance helps.

Take a tsunami for example. If you have ample warning, you will be able to get away to safety with your loved ones. But if you only become aware of it when you open the door, then it might be a little too late to do anything constructive. It is the same with divination. The sooner I am aware, the earlier I can take positive action that will shape my life for the better.

But yes, knowing in advance requires immense courage especially if it is not good news. Yet hiding my head in the sand like an ostrich will not change the inevitable. If I know early enough, no matter how bad it is, I still have a fighting chance of making a positive change to prevent or manage the situation better.

I believe that all lessons in life are training to prepare me for something greater. Since this is the path I have chosen, I will not run. I will face it as best as I can and hopefully I will be able to impart my experiences here.

I look forward to getting in touch with you about your question. I love helping people to make better choices in chaotic situations. There is no need to mull over it too greatly. Sometimes the “perfect” question arises through discussion. Email me. Let me know your goals, your concerns, your challenges and we will work something out together. I am the Vizier and I look forward to sharing your burden because this is what I am good at.

Thank you for your encouragement! I appreciate it! :)

  7. Hi Irving,

What an awesome post, my friend! I love the word you’ve chosen for 2012. “Perseverance”, for it is definitely the key to any and all of our endeavors in life.

In previous years, I really didn’t have a ritual that I practiced. I was simply going through the motions and not really paying any attention to where my life was headed. Looking back on it now, I realize that I was wasting a lot of valuable “living time”.

However, this year is totally different from any year I’ve had before. I actually have goals I’ve set for myself, and I entered 2012 in the spirit of expectancy to carry each of them out. I started a great work on redeveloping myself and my life about a year ago, and in working on myself over the last year, I truly believe that this will be the year that my life will literally take on a metamorphosis of sorts, and change for the better. I’m inspired by my past, the lost I’ve endure, the purpose I know I’m meant to embrace, the gain, the growth, the work, the lessons learned, and yes, of course the perseverance.

I’ve actually given 2012 two words… I’m calling it “The Year of Possibilities and Opportunities”. These are two words that I have in the past, have either avoided or missed out on altogether, but this year somethings different. I see them both clearly. I also see that the Universe is aligning the two and placing them both in my direct path. For this, I’m very grateful. That’s also why I rest in the spirit of expectancy. I’m expecting big things to show up this year for me. It’s been a struggle for the last 3 years of my life, and I’m truly ready to breath new life into my situation.

Thank you so much for visiting my site, my friend. I have thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. And I know it would not have happened unless the Universe saw fit to have our paths cross. I can’t even tell you the feeling I’m experiencing this very moment, but what I can tell you is this…. It’s a pleasure to meet you, my friend.

May 2012 bring to you all the very best and everything it has to offer you. I look forward to following you on this journey. Until next time, Cheers mate! :)
