As 2011 ends and 2012 approaches, it is a good time to reflect. Then I read Galen’s yearly ritual and retreat to her Batcave. This set me thinking. While my ritual is nothing like Galen’s, I too prepare for the new year in my own way.
2011 Thinking Ahead
My word for 2011 was “Thinking Ahead.” My aim was to continually practice to improve my foresight through divination and other means. While I did not get down to learning the game of “Go” fully, I did improve my foresight through other means. No matter what I did, I always made sure to think ahead.
2011 was not an easy year for me. I faced many difficulties that I barely managed. This forced me to think ahead and to divine extensively to see how best to act in the chaos. In the process, I found my usual divination questions to be somewhat lacking. To resolve this issue, I had to come up with new questions and to look at each situation from new angles. Because of adversity, my creativity and foresight had to improve to cope.
The Tao of 2012 for the Vizier
Everything in life is connected. Events that happen today have their roots and causes in the past. Each New Year that comes stands on the back of the year that has passed. As such, things that will happen in the future are already underway even if you are not fully aware of it. Because there is no way to assess the Tao of the new year on my own, I divine to prepare for the year ahead. The reading I got reveals that my Tao for 2012 is “Biting Through.”
Yijing Hexagram 21: Biting Through
BITING THROUGH has success.
It is favourable to let justice be administered.
When an obstacle to union arises, energetic biting through brings success. This is true in all situations. Whenever unity cannot be established, the obstruction is due to a talebearer and traitor who is interfering and blocking the way. To prevent permanent injury, vigorous measures must be taken at once. Deliberate obstruction of this sort does not vanish of its own accord. Judgment and punishment are required to deter or obviate it.
The image here is that of an obstruction that prevents an open mouth from closing. To bring the lips together, the mouth has to bite through the obstruction with energy. This is the way to manage the Tao of the situation to have success.
Applied to my life, there are obstructions that I have to deal with energetically. Once these obstructions appear, I have to act quickly and take vigorous measures to overcome them. But at the same time, I must make sure that I proceed in the right way. On the one hand, I must be clear about the best way to proceed. On the other hand, I must proceed with the right amount of energy. If I do not strike a proper balance in the measures I take, I will meet with misfortune.
With my reading in mind, the best way to manage my Tao for 2012 is to persevere. So “Perseverance” is the word I am choosing for 2012. The obstructions I face will not be easy to remove. If they were, they would not be obstructions for me in the first place.
I will probably have to break down the obstructions into a more manageable size to resolve it one by one. Then, I will need to follow up and to ensure that there are no loose ends or relapse. This will require a fair amount of perseverance on my part. By keeping this big picture in mind, I will know how to manage each problem as they arise.
