Fire by Travis Wiens

Have you ever faced a confusing situation where you did not know what to do or how to manage? Have you ever focused on a goal to the point that it compromised your judgement? Have your fears and doubts prevented you from taking decisive action when you should have?

You need inner clarity to manage any challenge you face. Without this inner brightness, it is akin to groping about in the dark, hoping to stumble upon an exit. At key points when you cannot afford to make mistakes, you are likelier to make many that will cost you dearly. How then can you maintain your clarity even in the most trying of times?

Getting Hit by Wikipedia

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!” -Rocky Balboa to his son

I am sure we have all taken hard hits from life at one point or other. It could be due to unexpected misfortunes. Or it could be due to hardships faced in trying to achieve a goal or to make a dream a reality. Yet we cannot and must not allow the hits we take to keep us down for good. We must reach deep within ourselves to find the strength to stand up and carry on especially when the going gets tough.

From personal experience, I have relied on three pillars to keep me going no matter what. Now I shall share them with you.

Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining by Siddhi

When something bad happens, it can seem like the end of the world. This is likelier to be the case when we are emotionally involved in a high stakes situation. Here, the pressure to succeed and avoid failure becomes immense. Every setback is a disaster, every mistake catastrophic. In such cases, it is tempting to focus on difficulties and make them bigger than they really are. It is easy to imagine the worst and to despair because things seem impossible in our minds. But is this really the case?

Flowing River by Joel Davies

Everything has a Tao. A situation may have a Tao, but how the people involved manage and deal with it is unique to them. The best way to act in accord with the Tao of a situation depends on the person involved. Factors such as goals, interests, beliefs, circumstances and creativity affect the choices open to them. What is the best choice for one may not be in the best interests of another.

Even so, when it comes to managing any situation, there are a few key steps. It does not really matter whether the situation is simple or complex. When you break it down, these are the basic steps to manage any situation.

Nanjing Road in the Rain by 23 Hours

As I prepared to head out of the door for lunch, my spider-sense tingled. Actually, it was my hand phone vibrating in my pocket. It turned out that my best friend needed a listening ear. And so, I called my best friend to do what I do best, listen. As I extended my broad and comforting presence to my friend in need, the sky darkened. Lightning flashed and thunder rumbled as the heavens opened. I sighed…Singapore was having yet another flash flood.

Half an hour later, the conversation ended, but the rain showed no sign of stopping. In fact, it seemed to take a perverse pleasure in getting heavier. It was late and I was hungry. I could not sit around waiting for the rain to stop. And so, cursing under my breath, I stepped out of the house with an umbrella. It was of little use. Although my brolly shielded my head from the rain, the winds just blew the rain right into my face instead, making my front wet. At least my back was dry. I did not dare to tempt the fates by saying “What else can go wrong?” The last thing I wanted was to wrestle with an umbrella turned inside out in the pouring rain. At this point, I could not appreciate how Bollywood movies made the rain seem like so much fun.

Success by Richard Styles

Adversity has its uses. It keeps you sharp and on your toes, ready to manage all that life has to throw at you. This is the only way to survive and triumph. Conversely, success blunts your edge. It makes you lax when you should be firm. It makes you complacent when you should be vigilant and there lies the danger.

Hexagram 47 Oppression

Hexagram 47 by Ben Finney

Times of adversity are the reverse of times of success, but they can lead to success if they befall the right man. When a strong man meets with adversity, he remains cheerful despite all danger, and this cheerfulness is the source of later successes; it is that stability which is stronger than fate. He who lets his spirit be broken by exhaustion certainly has no success. But if adversity only bends a man, it creates in him a power to react that is bound in time to manifest itself.

No inferior man is capable of this. Only the great man brings about good fortune and remains blameless. It is true that for the time being outward influence is denied him, because his words have no effect. Therefore in times of adversity it is important to be strong within and sparing of words.

-Hexagram 47 from The I-Ching or Book of Changes Translated by Richard Wilhelm, Cary F. Baynes. New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1997.

Dark Night by Mbarrison

Problems are a part of life. Every day, we have to face problems in various shapes and forms. It could be something simple and mundane like trying to deal with a virus in our PCs. Or it could be something more complicated like relationships. It could also be problems at work or something on a larger scale like unrest in the Middle East. All of these are problems that affect our lives directly or indirectly. While we can avoid some of these problems, we cannot avoid them all. Eventually, we will have to stand and fight.

In truth, facing problems is not such a bad thing. Since we cannot avoid all the problems or adversity in life, to be able to master challenges is a vital life skill. Our ability in this area determines whether we will be able to attain our goals and protect our interests. It determines whether life will shape or break us. As such, it makes perfect sense to master the challenges of life for the following reasons.

Luke’s Strongwoman by Official US Air Force

I love Galaxy Quest, a spoof of Star Trek. As a favourite comedy of mine, it never fails to make me laugh. But despite the humour of the show, one of its catchphrases, “Never give up, never surrender” is something we would all do well to bear in mind. Struggling against the odds can be difficult. It is always easier to give up and surrender than to endure the hardships that come with holding on. But success can only come to the one who has the fortitude to hold out and keep on trying. If you give up, there is no chance of success at all. To this end, here are 4 reasons we should never give up and never surrender.
