Deep Thought by Sasastro

The good memories we have of the past always seems more glorious than it really was. The more distant the past, the more glorious the good memories we have seem. The fact is many of us like to look at the past from time to time. But because it exists in our heads, our perception of events can be subjective.

Maybe the past was rosier than it is now. Maybe it was not. One thing is certain the past is the past. Living in the past or trying to recreate the past is hardly possible. Unless we realize this, we may face disappointment or even danger.

Doubt by Shahram Sharif

In our world today, people want to feel positive and happy. No one wants to feel negative emotions like pain, anger, depression, doubt or fear. This is rightly so for negative emotions taken to extremes can be harmful for us.

Yet, there is a time, place and reason for everything. If something happens that causes you to feel negative emotions, it is ok to feel the way you do. Trying to struggle against or suppress what you feel will only cause more problems for you. If you resist what you feel, you are going against the flow instead of with it. This requires continuous effort on your part that may be hard to sustain.

True Heart by Fangol

There will be instances in life that require you to win over people who oppose you and gain their sincere support. It is possible to gain compliance through bribes, fear and the use of force. But this is not sincere support. In any case, you will never be able to win hearts and minds in this manner. Instead, this lack of true support may cause problems for you in the future. For example, people might withdraw their support for you at key points due to a lack of loyalty.

What should you do in this case? You must move people with your sincerity. Specifically, you must show them your true heart.

Bust of Marcus Aurelius by Wikipedia

Life for many of us is trial and error. We live, we make mistakes and we fall down. Then we get back up and try all over again. Along the way, we gain insights and develop guidelines to make better choices and actions. There are many books and articles on guidelines to living a good life. The most famous of them would be Marcus AureliusMeditations, which I am sure many people have heard of and read.

Now I may not be a Roman Emperor or a wise philosopher. But I thought it would be a good exercise to write out a few guidelines of my own. On the one hand, it helps me to define my values and approach to living a good life. On the other hand, it helps me to examine them more closely.

You may not agree with all that I say. And this is fine because each of us has our own views about the world. But I do hope that you will be able to take away something with you. I also hope that it will cause you to reflect on and define some of the guidelines you have for living a good life.

Keeping Abreast of Relevant Changes by BBC World Service

Complacency can happen even to the best of us. During times of adversity, the dangers of complacency are obvious and so we are alert and on our toes to survive. But it is the times of success and the period of ease that follows, which can become our undoing. In theory, we are aware of the dangers of complacency. We know that we must not let our guard down. Heck, we even know that security is an illusion. But still, we fall prey to complacency at the worst possible times. How then do we manage complacency during a time of success and ease?

Changing Winds by Kevin Dooley

To live an inspired life in harmony with change is not an easy process. In truth, it is an ongoing effort because change can easily upset life as you know it. What may have worked for you before may suddenly no longer hold true and you will find yourself scrambling to adjust to new circumstances. There is no escaping it. As long as you live, you have to learn, change and grow. To do otherwise would only leave you and the people who depend on you vulnerable.

Success by Richard Styles

Adversity has its uses. It keeps you sharp and on your toes, ready to manage all that life has to throw at you. This is the only way to survive and triumph. Conversely, success blunts your edge. It makes you lax when you should be firm. It makes you complacent when you should be vigilant and there lies the danger.

Elephant without the Blind Men by http2007

The Blind Men and an Elephant

A long time ago, a king asked six blind men to discern what an elephant looked like by feeling different parts of its body. The blind man who felt its leg concluded that the elephant was like a pillar. Another who felt its tail surmised that it was like a rope. The one who felt its trunk said it was like a tree branch. The man who felt its ear said the elephant was like a hand fan. Feeling the elephant’s belly, another blind man sagely replied that the elephant was like a wall. Lastly, the one who felt its tusk said it was like a solid pipe.

The king acknowledged that they were all right, but only partially so. He then explained that each of the blind men had touched a different part of the elephant. But in truth, the elephant was the sum of all of those parts.

Ripples by Robin_24

Our lives are the sum of our choices. Each choice that we make, whether it is big or small, shapes and determines our lives. The most obvious result of our choices is the impact it has on us. But our choices can also have an impact the lives of others, especially our loved ones.

When you drop a pebble into the water, it creates a ripple expansion that radiates outwards. Similarly, the impact from our choices also radiates outwards, affecting the world around us for better or for worse. Good choices bring joy and blessings into our lives. Poor choices on the other hand, haunt us internally as regrets and externally as problems. Hence, we must be careful of the choices we make and the impact they have.
