Roadblock by Scazon

Setbacks happen. One moment you are pressing forward, making great strides towards your goal. The next moment you find yourself slamming into a brick wall that appeared out of nowhere, at high speed. The impact throws you off your feet and onto your back. You suffer injuries and lose your momentum. Instead of moving forward, you now have to cope with this turn of events.

At best, it is a minor irritant. At worst, it can be a devastating blow, which you may not recover from quickly enough. But what matters is not what happens; it is dealing with it that counts.

Have you ever faced a confusing situation where you did not know what to do or how to manage? Have you ever focused on a goal to the point that it compromised your judgement? Have your fears and doubts prevented you from taking decisive action when you should have?

You need inner clarity to manage any challenge you face. Without this inner brightness, it is akin to groping about in the dark, hoping to stumble upon an exit. At key points when you cannot afford to make mistakes, you are likelier to make many that will cost you dearly. How then can you maintain your clarity even in the most trying of times?

The end is just as important as the start, if not more so. This applies to many areas in life especially relationships, where a bad end can have lasting damage. Relationships usually start with great care. Even if there are a few minor hiccups, the start must be reasonably good for the relationship to survive and thrive. But if things sour midway leading to the end of a relationship, the end is rarely as good as the start.

Everything has a start and an end. With each end comes a new beginning. This is the way of the world and the natural order of things. But here lies the problem. The sharing of knowledge is a two-way street. Both the student and the teacher have to take responsibility for their parts in this process. Before a teacher can teach, the student must be willing to learn. But if the student who is willing to learn still does poorly in the subject matter after due diligence, then the teacher may have to review the way they share their knowledge.

Viktor Frankl once said that, “What is to give light must endure the burning.” I believe that the mistakes we make in life contain important lessons. Unless we learn these lessons well, we will keep on making the same mistakes until we get them right. But once we have learned our lessons, it is important to share our insights with those who need it. In this way, we help to light the way for others with our experiences.

Today, I am going to share the life lessons that I have learned with you. It is my wish that my life lessons will light your life’s journey in some small way. This article is also my contribution to the Life Lessons Series hosted by Abubakar Jamil in collaboration with Farnoosh Brock. Without further ado, here are the lessons that I learned.

Boy and his bear by Rick Hawkins

“He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how.” Viktor Frankl, the eminent psychotherapist and holocaust survivor, was fond of quoting Nietzsche. He believed that those who had an aim or purpose in life could bear almost any hardship to fulfil it. But those who had nothing to live for would find life meaningless and lack the strength to carry on. The following are 10 benefits of having meaning in life:
