Sun Rise by Crvdude

As 2011 ends and 2012 approaches, it is a good time to reflect. Then I read Galen’s yearly ritual and retreat to her Batcave. This set me thinking. While my ritual is nothing like Galen’s, I too prepare for the new year in my own way.

Storm Clouds by Failing Angel

It is generally not a good idea to have any favourites. This way, you will not favour one thing over another and have bias in your actions. Even so, one of my favourite changes in life is the time of deliverance.

How can I not like it? After a period of difficulty and hardship, tensions begin to ease; things take a turn for the better. I have survived a time of danger and am now on the threshold of reaching my goals. But here it pays to be cautious and manage well to avoid snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Complacency can be my undoing. How then should you manage a time of deliverance?

Hexagram 47 Oppression

Hexagram 47 by Ben Finney

Times of adversity are the reverse of times of success, but they can lead to success if they befall the right man. When a strong man meets with adversity, he remains cheerful despite all danger, and this cheerfulness is the source of later successes; it is that stability which is stronger than fate. He who lets his spirit be broken by exhaustion certainly has no success. But if adversity only bends a man, it creates in him a power to react that is bound in time to manifest itself.

No inferior man is capable of this. Only the great man brings about good fortune and remains blameless. It is true that for the time being outward influence is denied him, because his words have no effect. Therefore in times of adversity it is important to be strong within and sparing of words.

-Hexagram 47 from The I-Ching or Book of Changes Translated by Richard Wilhelm, Cary F. Baynes. New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1997.

Nature provides much insight about life if we take the time to notice. Being like water for example can help us to manage the problems we face. Then, there is the matter of gradual development. No matter how much we try to rush matters, everything will only unfold at its own time. If we complete a process through excessive haste, the desired outcome will not occur. This applies to many areas in life. Whether it is the growth of a tree or the growth of a relationship or even the growth of a nation, only gradual development can ensure lasting success.

Eating by The Hidaway

How do you feel after watching a sad movie or reading a depressing book? Most likely, you would feel awful. But when you watch a comedy or read a light-hearted novel, you are likely to feel good. As you can see, the way we choose to nourish ourselves can produce different results. In fact, it can make or break us. Yet when it comes to our nourishment, most of us follow our moods and passions without considering the long-term effects. While it may not be immediately apparent, every action and choice we make in life has a price. We can choose to pay it now or later. If you wish to take control of your life, then it is important that you pay close attention to the way you nourish yourself.

Statue of Liberty by Kevin Gilmour

Most people are aware of the tragedy of the Tucson shootings that has marred the start of 2011. But such shootings are not a one-off thing. This is unlikely to be the last shooting that we will see. As I read Sandra Lee’s article, it reminded me of the heavy price that comes with freedom.

In this day and age, we have endless choices and possibilities that those before us did not. It is true that freedom is not uniform across the world. Some countries have more freedom than others do. Yet freedom taken to the extreme can only result in tragedies. In fact, anything taken to the extreme can lead to problems. As such, I wish to share two sources which I feel sheds light on the price of freedom.

“We human beings are only a part of something very much larger…We must use whatever methods we can to understand the movement of the universe around us and time our actions so that we are not fighting the currents, but moving with them.
-Memoirs of the Geisha”

Dark Path by Scott Clout

Infinite possibilities lie before us. But not all of these options are beneficial to our lives. Life, as you and I know, is about making choices. It is about creating your future, through your actions and choices, with the help of the 6 steps.

Yet to create this future, you have to leave your comfort zone and venture forth into the great unknown. To reach your goals, you have to go through the darkness of uncertainty. Even with the best-laid plans, you are bound to stumble over unseen obstacles. You are bound to let unforeseen developments catch you off guard. Today I tell you that this need not be the case. With the 7th step, you will gain greater clarity about the opportunities and pitfalls that lie along your chosen path. If you so choose, you can reduce uncertainty in your life and light your way to your future.

Yijing Hexagram Table by Zero-X

The I-Ching, Yijing or Book of Changes was born thousands of years ago in China. It started out as a divination manual and slowly evolved into a book of wisdom as well. Throughout the ages, people from all levels of society have turned to it for advice. They include emperors, statesmen, thinkers, merchants and common folk. Even today, the Yijing remains relevant. Thanks to the efforts of Richard Wilhelm, Carl Jung and the many Yijing enthusiasts out there, it is more famous and more widely read than ever. For me, it is the one book that I reread on a daily basis. If you wonder why, here is a list of benefits that I have derived from reading the Yijing.

Reading has always been a large part of my life. My upbringing instilled in me a strong love for reading from a young age. However, it was my nature; I am an INFJ, my experiences and my quest for knowledge that determined the books I would gravitate towards. All my life I have been searching for the answer to one burning question; how to handle life. In my three decades here on this planet, I have found a few books that provided some answers to that question. These books have shaped and influenced my life. What follows is a list of the books.
