Getting Hit by Wikipedia

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!” -Rocky Balboa to his son

I am sure we have all taken hard hits from life at one point or other. It could be due to unexpected misfortunes. Or it could be due to hardships faced in trying to achieve a goal or to make a dream a reality. Yet we cannot and must not allow the hits we take to keep us down for good. We must reach deep within ourselves to find the strength to stand up and carry on especially when the going gets tough.

From personal experience, I have relied on three pillars to keep me going no matter what. Now I shall share them with you.

Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining by Siddhi

When something bad happens, it can seem like the end of the world. This is likelier to be the case when we are emotionally involved in a high stakes situation. Here, the pressure to succeed and avoid failure becomes immense. Every setback is a disaster, every mistake catastrophic. In such cases, it is tempting to focus on difficulties and make them bigger than they really are. It is easy to imagine the worst and to despair because things seem impossible in our minds. But is this really the case?

True Heart by Fangol

There will be instances in life that require you to win over people who oppose you and gain their sincere support. It is possible to gain compliance through bribes, fear and the use of force. But this is not sincere support. In any case, you will never be able to win hearts and minds in this manner. Instead, this lack of true support may cause problems for you in the future. For example, people might withdraw their support for you at key points due to a lack of loyalty.

What should you do in this case? You must move people with your sincerity. Specifically, you must show them your true heart.

Sun Rise by Crvdude

As 2011 ends and 2012 approaches, it is a good time to reflect. Then I read Galen’s yearly ritual and retreat to her Batcave. This set me thinking. While my ritual is nothing like Galen’s, I too prepare for the new year in my own way.

Helping Hand by Lusi

The old saying goes that no one is an island. At some point or other, we will have to ask for help because there are too many things that we cannot know. We will need to rely on the expertise of others. Now, the way we ask for help affects the quality and extent of help that we will receive. If we do so in a half-hearted or off-putting manner, we are unlikely to get the help we need. Even if we did get help, it will not be whole-hearted which can make a lot of difference. But if we ask for help with sincerity, we are likelier to get the help we need. To illustrate this point, I would like to share a favourite story of mine.

Luke’s Strongwoman by Official US Air Force

I love Galaxy Quest, a spoof of Star Trek. As a favourite comedy of mine, it never fails to make me laugh. But despite the humour of the show, one of its catchphrases, “Never give up, never surrender” is something we would all do well to bear in mind. Struggling against the odds can be difficult. It is always easier to give up and surrender than to endure the hardships that come with holding on. But success can only come to the one who has the fortitude to hold out and keep on trying. If you give up, there is no chance of success at all. To this end, here are 4 reasons we should never give up and never surrender.

Piano Lesson by Amazing Podgirl

When I was a little boy, I struggled with perseverance. I would begin a new project eagerly, but midway through I lost interest and gave up. One example was when I took up piano lessons. I cannot remember what inspired me to do so, but I must have gotten it into my head that playing the piano was cool. Soon, harsh reality set in and I realized that I needed to put in practice and hard work to look cool. It was too much effort for me. I quickly grew bored and resented missing my favourite cartoon shows during my lessons. In the end, I gave up and never played the piano again.

Upon reflection, I realized that I wanted to learn to play the piano based on a whim. But whims do not give you staying power when you face difficulties. Instead, I believe that having a burning purpose behind everything you do is the key to perseverance. When you know why you have to do something, you will get it done. Few odds can stop you from achieving your goals. Even so, it also helps to have other gentle reminders to keep you focused when the going gets tough. I have carefully selected some quotes on perseverance that I find inspiring. It is my hope and wish that these quotes will inspire you to persevere in the face of challenges as it has for me.

I have always admired Tokugawa Ieyasu. He established the Tokugawa Shogunate which went on to rule Japan in the name of the emperor for 250 years. But during his lifetime, this outcome was far from certain. There were many rivals who surpassed him in skill and might. But by being in harmony with the time and circumstances, Tokugawa survived all his rivals to unite Japan. What follows is a quote that shows how he coped with the difficulties he faced in life.
